The Paleolab is a multimedia museum that, through various interactive experiences, allows visitors to embark on a journey back in time to the Cretaceous period, when Pietraroja was located at the edge of a lagoon. Fossils of fish, crocodiles, and salamanders date back to that era and have been known since the 1700s, especially the Scipionyx Samniticus, the small celosaurus cub that lived 110 million years ago, unique because it still has intact internal organs and muscle fibers. The visit begins with a geological elevator, a sort of teleportation, through which visitors travel in seconds through geological eras until they reach the Cretaceous. The exhibits, sets, films, and a large interactive aquarium allow visitors in the museum’s first rooms to enter this tropical environment and meet its inhabitants. All fossils are displayed as replicas for safety reasons. Continuing the journey through the Paleolab, visitors trace the geological phases that led to the birth of Italy and its mountains through various rooms. The last rooms of the museum are dedicated to the history of living beings on Earth and the fossils that allow us to reconstruct that history. For younger children, a dig site has been set up to relive the excitement of paleontological discoveries, and an educational laboratory has been created where it is possible to use plaster molds to make a small cast of the displayed fossils. Moreover, through the viewing of cartoons, children can get a simplified summary of what they have seen during the visit. The tour ends in the projection room where it is possible to watch 3D films about the paleontological site.
