The Villa Sorra collection, whose exhibition spaces are currently awaiting reopening to the public, consists of tools and artifacts belonging to various sectors of domestic life and rural and urban work, representing a significant testimony of the recent past and providing a valuable documentary contribution for the study of Modena’s history. The collection, donated by Celeste Simonini to the Municipality of Modena in 1973, has since been kept in Villa Sorra Frosini in Gaggio di Piano, owned by a consortium of four municipalities in the area. The partial uninhabitability of the villa led to the museum’s closure in 1986, and its assets are currently undergoing inventory, cataloging, and restoration by the Civic Museum of Modena. The entire collection includes over nine thousand objects: tools and utensils from the peasant world, clothing and fabrics, wedding and newborn trousseaus, tools and artisanal products from the blacksmith, watchmaker, goldsmith, and pewterer’s workshops. Additionally, some carriages, carts, and two-wheeled carts are exhibited. The various artifacts were mainly collected from the area around the city of Modena.
