Dominican Cigars: Fine Tobaccos and Iconic Brands | FullTravel

Dominican Cigars, Fine Tobaccos

The area where Santiago de los Caballeros stands, which Dominicans affectionately call “the second capital” (after Santo Domingo, it is indeed the country’s most populous city), nestled between the Northern and Central mountain ranges, offers spectacular and lush vegetation, delighting the eyes of those traveling north from the capital.

A spectacular area due to its geographical position, an ideal microclimate, and strict rules for production: this is how the finest cigars of the Dominican Republic are born.

It was here that in the early 1990s the Swiss company Davidoff decided to move all its production, relocating it from the Cuban area where it had been until then. A bold choice that proved to be an undeniable success, thanks on one hand to the extraordinary climatic conditions of the place, which is particularly protected, and on the other to a set of regulations that rigorously control every single step from sowing to the finished cigar. It is here that, after strict production and quality checks and passing through the skillful fingers of expert torcedores, cigars from the brand’s most famous lines are created: Avo, Griffin’s, Zino, just to name a few.

But Davidoff is not alone in choosing these places as their land of preference: the Dominican Republic is one of the leading countries in the world for the production of fine cigars and is home to famous tobacco manufacturers recognized as Dominican D.O.C., such as León Jimenes Cigarros.

The company, founded in 1903 by Eduardo León Jimenes, is considered a piece of Dominican history: from the small town of Guzmal, Eduardo moved in the 1930s to Santo Domingo to be closer to the target market. From the very beginning, the company became the benchmark for cigar production in the Dominican Republic, and a cigar crafted by the master cigar makers of the company has always been synonymous with quality under the brands La Aurora and León Jimenes.

Whatever the choice, the artisanal production of cigars is a Dominican peculiarity that is a true gem for enthusiasts and represents a welcomed gift or an excellent souvenir of the country, as well as a source of great pride for the Dominican people.
