The history of the Ecclesiastical Museum of the Co-Cathedral Basilica of San Sabino is linked to that of the historic building where it is housed and the long-standing historical and archaeological research conducted on the Christian, late antique, and medieval archaeological sites of the city. Palazzo Fracchiolla-Minerva, a valuable nineteenth-century building donated by Bishop Minerva to the Co-Cathedral Parish of San Sabino by testamentary will, was designated as the museum’s seat. The Co-Cathedral Basilica of San Sabino established the Ecclesiastical Museum of the Co-Cathedral, classified among Non-State Museums by Ministerial Decree on 15.09.1965. This classification followed the assignment of the Cathedral’s Treasury to the Chapter of the Cathedral of San Sabino in 1960. In 2005, following the assignment of the Palazzo as the new museum venue, the Bishop of Andria issued the decree for the establishment of the Ecclesiastical Museum of the Co-Cathedral of San Sabino in Canosa di Puglia. Over the years, agreements between the founding museum, the Superintendence of Archaeological Heritage of Puglia, and the Universities of Bari and Foggia led to the creation of the “Bishops’ Museum,” a historical-archaeological museum dedicated to reconstructing the history of the Canosina diocese.
