The diocesan chapter museum is located in Piazza della Repubblica, the ancient platea magna and vibrant heart of the city of Foligno. Attached to the Cathedral of San Feliciano, documented since the 11th century, it nests against the transept and the left nave, within the Palazzo delle Canoniche which was radically transformed in 1746. With the restoration from 1923-26, the palace was restored to its original sobriety by reopening the biforas and adding the crenellated terminal part.
Set up since 2008 on the second floor of the Palazzo delle Canoniche, it currently houses about fifty works from the cathedral and places within the Diocese. The museum visit also includes the Crypt of San Feliciano (7th-9th century), recently restored.
The museum path begins with a wooden sculpture representing the patron Saint Feliciano. The museum exhibits works formerly owned by the local Roscioli family, donated to the cathedral in 1703, which include two portrait busts from the workshop of Gian Lorenzo Bernini and a copy of Raphael’s Madonna of Foligno. Among the works originating from the cathedral are paintings by Ferraù Faenzoni and Pomarancio, while from city churches and the territory come some medieval wooden sculptures, paintings by Bartolomeo di Tommaso, the tabernacle with the wooden Crucifix by Niccolò Alunno and Pietro Mazzaforte, and the Workshop of Saint Joseph, attributed to Georges de La Tour. The collection is completed by processional crosses in silver and gilded copper (14th-16th century), liturgical utensils, and numerous reliquaries formerly kept in the cathedral crypt.
