The museum, already existing in the second half of the nineteenth century, was reopened in 2004 after renovation works of the premises. It displays the complete collection of Biccherna tablets remaining in Siena, that is, the covers of the Biccherna administration registers, the financial magistracy of the Municipality of Siena. Starting from 1257 the covers were made as true paintings executed by the most important Sienese artists. Other magistracies of the Municipality of Siena and other city entities also had tablets similar to those of Biccherna made until the mid-eighteenth century. The second section of the museum consists of the Documentary Exhibition where documents from the eighth century to the nineteenth century are displayed (including some beautiful illuminated manuscripts) and the Dantesca Exhibition with documents related to characters of the Divine Comedy.
