The current Civic and Diocesan Museum of Sacred Art was established in 1995 from the merger of two important collections: the civic one, which was formed in the early 1920s by the will of the Society of Friends of Art, and the sacred art collection, already housed in the Sant’Alberto room in the Bishop’s Palace, created in the late 1960s in memory of Monsignor Francesco Niccoli, the last bishop residing in the city. As a whole, the exhibition complex gathers documents of particular cultural significance, essential for understanding the artistic history of the city and the entire diocesan territory.
