Germany is a country rich in notable Christmas traditions, so it should come as no surprise that every year thousands of people head to German cities around the holidays.
Christmas Markets Hanover
Hanover’s Christmas markets — open from November 23 to December 22 — are also worth a visit, especially because they are true Christmas villages with some unique features.
The main Christmas market in Hanover is located right in the city center, spreading out street by street around the Marktkirche church. In total, it consists of over 170 wooden huts where you can find snowmen, decorations, Christmas-themed items, local crafts, sweets, and typical food and wine products.
Quite different is Hanover’s second market: called the “Historic Christmas Village“, it transports visitors to an atmosphere of bygone times, as it recreates places and stories from the Middle Ages. It’s like stepping back into Lower Saxony centuries ago — a unique experience, always centered on the theme of Advent and the holidays.
Finally, the third Christmas Market in Hanover is located in Ballhofplatz and is inspired by what could be a Finnish Christmas Village, complete with stands serving roasted fish (Flammlach) and mulled wine (Glögi). Given the chance to savor these typical products, a good idea is to save this market for last, concluding the day here with a traditional dinner.

The varied program of events on stage will delight visitors’ eyes and ears. Children will be enchanted by puppets, glass painters, storytellers, and carousels, and can become little chefs in the Christmas bakery.
Hanover awaits you in all its splendor: let yourself be captured by this Christmas atmosphere in the company of city guides.
