The “Biographical Museum of Padre Pio” is a wax museum, created in 2001 by the Museum Project Society of Florence in collaboration with the Municipality of San Giovanni Rotondo. It is located in the historic center (Via Pirgiano), in the building where Cav. Francesco Morcaldi lived, who was multiple times mayor of San Giovanni Rotondo and a close friend of Padre Pio (in the 1920s he fought to prevent Padre Pio’s removal from San Giovanni Rotondo, personally leading city demonstrations in favor of the Capuchin friar). Inside the museum, key scenes from the life of Saint Pio of Pietrelcina are depicted. After a thorough renovation of Palazzo Morcaldi, the setup of the ten scenes that form the core of the museum was completed. These were chosen after careful study of Padre Pio’s life, with the advice of the Capuchin Friars Minor of San Giovanni Rotondo and a special commission made up of historians and members of the municipal council. Part of the exhibits was created in Pisa, at the OPUS studios, a professional association formed by young and sensitive artists responsible for the design and execution of the work, before completing the work on-site from April 9 to May 9, 2001.
