Barcelona will kick off the most magical time of year by switching on the city’s Christmas lights on November 24. An eclectic show blending theatre, circus, and music will pay tribute to the people of Barcelona across seven scenes, celebrating local shops, communities, youth, and creativity. This year, the city’s illuminations are set to be more elaborate than ever, shining a spotlight on Barcelona’s creative spirit. The first lights to be switched on in this ambitious project will adorn Plaça de Catalunya, Gran Via de les Corts Catalanes, and Carrer d’Aragó.
A highlight this year is the 12-pointed star that will shine from the top of the Virgin Mary tower of the Sagrada Familia—the first of the basilica’s six main spires to be completed. At over 400 metres high, the star will be visible from all across the city.
From November 22 to January 15, the Recinte Modernista de Sant Pau will once again be transformed with a dazzling light show: Els Llums de Sant Pau. This year’s theme, Universe of Light, is a cosmic journey featuring more than 20 installations dedicated to galaxies, stars, and planets—perfect for both families and adults.
It’s the second year for Els Llums de Sant Pau, which last year lit up Barcelona and attracted over 210,000 visitors, with tickets selling out on most dates. But Christmas in Barcelona is full of surprises and offers activities for everyone.

Fan of Christmas markets?
Barcelona’s Christmas markets and fairs are truly charming, with thousands of stalls waiting for visitors. The most popular sell nativity figurines—central to Christmas in every Catalan family. Alongside the classic ones, you’ll also find unique Catalan characters like the Tió—a smiling log—and the quirky caganer. Don’t miss the historic Fira de Santa Llúcia, which dates back to 1786 and is ranked by Lonely Planet as one of Europe’s most atmospheric Christmas markets. Also unmissable is the Fira de la Sagrada Familia, set against the backdrop of the iconic basilica. For nativity fans, special exhibitions abound—including a memorable living nativity at Poble Espanyol.

Music
During the holidays, Barcelona hosts over 100 free concerts in a variety of styles and genres, held throughout the city’s markets and streets. Traditional carol performances take place in iconic venues like the Sagrada Familia, while classical concerts are staged in prestigious halls including the Liceu, Palau de la Música, and L’Auditori.
Shopping
At Christmas, every neighborhood shop dresses up for the festivities, and window displays sparkle with festive decorations. Shopping centres and department stores bring the holiday spirit to life with unique decor and special events that make Christmas shopping unforgettable. For truly special gifts, check out Barcelona’s Unique Shops, each with its own specialty.

Unconventional Christmas
If you’re seeking something different, the Barcelona Swimming Club’s Christmas Cup might be for you. Now a local tradition on December 25, swimmers set off from the old port, near L’Aquàrium, for a 200-metre race in the Mediterranean. The event is repeated on January 1 for an invigorating start to the new year.
