In the valley of the Lower Ofanto rises the hill of the famous settlement of Canne della Battaglia, the scene of the famous battle between Romans and Carthaginians (216 BC). Surrounded by strong walls, used for several centuries, Canne now offers visitors a long and fascinating route that includes the Antiquarium, the remarkable remains from Roman, Paleochristian, and medieval eras on the so-called “citadel,” and finally the ancient Daunian village with a necropolis in the Fontanella area. In particular, the Antiquarium’s substantial archaeological material documents Canne’s long continuity of life from Prehistory to the Middle Ages.
