Passport
To visit the United States for any reason (holiday, study, work), you need an electronic passport. Make sure it’s valid until the day you return to Italy. If your passport expires in the next few months, schedule your renewal appointment right away—yes, it’s better to do it early, as waiting times in Italy can be several months.

ESTA
If you’re an Italian citizen visiting the USA for tourism for less than 90 days, you don’t need a visa—just an ESTA authorization. You must apply for and obtain the ESTA before boarding any transport to the USA. Whether you’re flying or taking a cruise, check that your ESTA is valid (it lasts one year) before you leave.
How to get an ESTA and how much it costs
You can apply if:
- you have Italian citizenship;
- your stay in the USA is less than 90 days;
- you have an Italian electronic passport with a microchip in the cover. Since 26 October 2006, all Italian passports are electronic.
ESTA can be applied for online on the official U.S. homeland security website. Since June 1, 2023, there’s also a mobile app. The fee is $21, payable by credit card at the end of the application, like any online purchase.

Before leaving for the USA, make sure you have a credit card in your name.
Credit card is the most widely accepted payment method in the States; having one prevents issues in places that don’t take cash, prepaid, or debit cards.
