The United States is a dream destination for travel lovers. But since it’s overseas, not part of the European Union, and some aspects of American culture are very different from what we’re used to (health care being a major one), it’s crucial—beyond booking flights, transport, and accommodation—to make sure you’ve packed a few key items before leaving.

Here are the 6 essentials you shouldn’t forget for your first trip to the USA.

  1. Passport

To visit the United States for any reason (holiday, study, work), you need an electronic passport. Make sure it’s valid until the day you return to Italy. If your passport expires in the next few months, schedule your renewal appointment right away—yes, it’s better to do it early, as waiting times in Italy can be several months.

  1. ESTA

If you’re an Italian citizen visiting the USA for tourism for less than 90 days, you don’t need a visa—just an ESTA authorization. You must apply for and obtain the ESTA before boarding any transport to the USA. Whether you’re flying or taking a cruise, check that your ESTA is valid (it lasts one year) before you leave.

How to get an ESTA and how much it costs

You can apply if:

  • you have Italian citizenship;
  • your stay in the USA is less than 90 days;
  • you have an Italian electronic passport with a microchip in the cover. Since 26 October 2006, all Italian passports are electronic.

ESTA can be applied for online on the official U.S. homeland security website. Since June 1, 2023, there’s also a mobile app. The fee is $21, payable by credit card at the end of the application, like any online purchase.

  1. Credit Card

Before leaving for the USA, make sure you have a credit card in your name.

Credit card is the most widely accepted payment method in the States; having one prevents issues in places that don’t take cash, prepaid, or debit cards.

Which credit cards are accepted in the USA?

All major credit cards (not prepaid ones) from the VISA, Mastercard, and American Express circuits are accepted in the US. PostePay and Maestro cards may not work.

  1. USA SIM

To use internet on your phone and stay in touch while in the United States, get a USA SIM. The most convenient option is to buy a Holafly eSIM for the USA.

eSIMs are digital SIM cards. They let you access data and phone services through a chip in your device, so you don’t need a physical card. You can buy and set up the service online, saving time and hassle.

For your trip, choose an eSIM valid in the United States for your entire stay.

  1. Health Insurance

Health insurance is not mandatory for visiting the USA. However, unlike Italy, medical care is not free. Even a minor issue can result in steep bills, so it’s definitely recommended to have health insurance. It’s affordable and can be purchased online.

  1. Power Adapter

Power outlets in the USA are different from those in Italy. Voltage is also different (110v vs 220v). Bring a power adapter so you can charge and use your devices (smartphone, laptop, electric shaver, etc.) It can be bought at the airport or on arrival, but for peace of mind, buying it in advance is best.

These are the 6 must-have items to pack before your trip to the United States. Get organized early so you have everything with you at boarding. Have a great trip!
