While the interesting programs and cultural events continue in Mantova – as the current Italian Capital of Culture – at the Ministry of Cultural Heritage and Activities and Tourism, a lot of work has been done in recent weeks to designate the next city to receive this prestigious recognition. Yesterday, Minister Dario Franceschini officially announced the decision: Pistoia will be the Italian Capital of Culture 2017. The Tuscan town has therefore been chosen, competing with eight other highly motivated cities: in the competition were also Aquileia, Como, Herculaneum, Parma, Pisa, Spoleto, Taranto, and Terni.

This initiative has once again led the various interested administrations to draw up cultural programs of great importance: an undoubtedly significant signal that reflects the richness of Italian offerings.

Today, more than ever, vitality is brought to the forefront by projects of this kind at the ministerial level, certainly stimulating and also “revitalizing” from an economic perspective. The election of Pistoia as the Italian Capital of Culture 2017 will bring one million euros to the city’s coffers from central government funds, as a contribution for the implementation of the many activities connected to the special year Pistoia is about to celebrate.

Three criteria influenced the decision to select Pistoia over other deserving locations: the competent Ministry explained that priority was given to the quality of the informational content of the dossier submitted by the city administration for the official application. Additionally, the significance of the project was appreciated, and finally, the sustainability of the initiative as a whole was positively evaluated. A great achievement, an important recognition, and clearly, a significant responsibility for Pistoia.
