From July 25, 2025, travelers departing from Italian airports can say goodbye to the annoying 100 milliliters limit for liquids in carry-on luggage. Thanks to the official green light from ECAC (European Civil Aviation Conference), CT scanner technology can now be used without restrictions, allowing up to 2 liters of liquids to be transported without the need to divide them into transparent bottles.

The technology that changed everything: Hi-Scan 6040 CTiX

The new system is based on Hi-Scan 6040 CTiX three-dimensional scanners, produced by Smiths Detection, already tested and installed at various Italian airports. These devices allow for more accurate and faster screening, making it unnecessary to remove liquids and electronic devices from carry-on luggage. It’s a breakthrough for security and passenger comfort.

Italian airports already equipped

  • Milan Malpensa (MXP)
  • Milan Linate (LIN)
  • Rome Fiumicino (FCO)
  • Turin Caselle (TRN)
  • Bologna Guglielmo Marconi (BLQ)
  • Bergamo Orio al Serio (BGY)
  • Catania Fontanarossa (CTA)

The mentioned airports are already equipped with the necessary technology and have obtained approval to apply the new regulations immediately.

Attention to exceptions

It should be remembered that the new rules are only valid for departures from an airport equipped with CT scanner technology. In case of return flights from countries not yet updated or transfers at airports not suitable, compliance with the old 100 ml rule may still be required. Additionally, the limit remains active for flights heading directly to the United States and Israel due to local security regulations.

Impact on the sector and benefits for travelers

This innovation also represents an important step for tourism and the MICE sector (Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, and Exhibitions). Business and leisure travelers can save time at security checks, avoiding queues and stress, with positive impacts on customer experience.

For airports, full operation of the new scanners offers a competitive advantage, especially on international routes within the EU, where smooth security procedures can influence the choices of frequent travelers.
