ITA Airways and Italo have formalized a memorandum of understanding aimed at developing an integrated air and rail transport offer in Italy. The agreement, signed by the respective CEOs Joerg Eberhart and Gianbattista La Rocca, represents a significant step towards more efficient and innovative intermodality.

The project includes the sale of a combined ticket, which will allow passengers to purchase both the flight and train travel in a single transaction. This solution will be available starting from July 2026, through travel agencies, travel managers via the GDS system, and directly on the ITA Airways website (ita-airways.com).

The integrated product will feature fare flexibility, designed to adapt to the different needs of travelers, and a particular focus on customer experience. The objective is to ensure a simple, coordinated, and comfortable journey, with waiting times minimized between the different modes of transport.

A step towards sustainable and shared mobility

Joerg Eberhart emphasized how this collaboration strengthens ITA Airways’ offering of quality connections, enhancing the interconnection between air and rail transport and expanding the range of destinations served both in Italy and abroad.

Gianbattista La Rocca highlighted Italo’s commitment to intermodality, which for years has integrated trains with other means of transport such as buses and ships, and now also with airplanes. The agreement stems from a shared strategic vision that puts the passenger at the center, aiming for an efficient, flexible, and sustainable travel experience, aligned with common ESG commitments.

This initiative represents an important evolution for the passenger transport market in Italy, offering new opportunities to travel agencies and travel managers to propose integrated and competitive solutions.
