Booking AI Trip Planner: Artificial Intelligence for Travel Tips

Built on the current machine learning models of Booking.com, which recommend destinations and accommodation options daily to millions of travelers on the platform, the AI Trip Planner also leverages the LLM (Large Language Model) technology of OpenAI’s ChatGPT API to create a new interactive experience for those looking to plan their trips.

A New Way to Search and Explore on Booking.com

Users can ask the AI Trip Planner anything about their trip and inquire very specifically about all phases of planning, from searching for potential destinations and accommodation options inspired by their needs and requirements, to creating itineraries for specific cities, countries, or regions.

More Personalized and Contextual Travel Advice

Travelers can chat with the AI Trip Planner to explain what they are looking for in broad or more specific terms, ask questions, and refine the search in real-time, obtaining numerous alternative options in seconds. From finding inspiration for a romantic beach vacation in the Caribbean to searching for a vacation home with air conditioning and a pool for a family of four, the AI Trip Planner provides recommendations easily and quickly.

An Integrated Travel Planning Experience

The AI Trip Planner advances the travel planning process by providing travelers with a visual list of destinations and accommodations, including Booking.com price information, with access to other web pages for more details. Users can scroll through the chat with the AI Trip Planner and the Booking.com app interface while evaluating their options. With a simple click on a property of interest, they can complete the booking. This is possible because the AI Trip Planner is directly integrated within the Booking.com app, in the accommodation booking section.

Our main goal at Booking.com has always been to leverage technology to simplify travel“, stated Glenn Fogel, CEO of Booking.com. “Recent advances in generative AI are accelerating work initiated many years ago on automated learning, aiming to improve all aspects of the customer experience on our platform, whether optimizing the proper display order of hotel photos or highlighting the most relevant reviews. Our new AI Trip Planner is simply a natural continuation of our ongoing journey — to bring even more value and fun to travel planning“.

Our new AI Trip Planner offers truly exciting possibilities to help our customers search for travel options and plan seamlessly and naturally“, said Rob Francis, CTO of Booking.com. “People are often asked to adapt to technology to do what they want, but with generative AI, we can start having direct conversations with our customers on their terms: it’s just like talking about a vacation with your partner or friends. This is just the beginning, but we have many paths to explore to innovate and connect the travel experience further on Booking.com, all in a safe, ethical, and inclusive manner“.

Starting from June 28th, the beta version of the AI Trip Planner is available in the USA for a selected group of Genius members of Booking.com, with the number expected to grow in the coming weeks. This means U.S. travelers must log into their Booking.com account directly in the app and set the language to English to access the new travel planning tool.
