The Historical Museum is located at the Idroscalo of Vigna di Valle, the oldest in Italy, situated on the south bank of Lake Bracciano where, in 1904, by the will of Major of the Engineers Mario Maurizio Moris, the recognized father of Italian aviation, the first Experimental Aeronautical Workshop was established. The Museum, with its 13,000 m2 of covered exhibition space, is one of the largest and most interesting flight museums in the world. Arranged over four large exhibition pavilions, it houses more than 60 aircraft and a considerable collection of engines and various aeronautical memorabilia that chronologically recount the history of military flight in Italy and that of the men who were its protagonists. The route unfolds through sectors dedicated to Pioneers, Airships, World War I (Troster hangar, start of visit), the epic of the Polar Flights of General Nobile, the Great Mass Cruises, the Schneider Trophy, the aircraft between the two wars (Velo hangar), World War II and the large airplanes (Badoni hangar), ending with the last pavilion illustrating the post-war rebirth of the Italian Air Force, which includes contemporary jet aircraft (Skema hangar).
