Il mausoleum, located near the quarries where on March 24, 1944, the massacre of 335 civilians was carried out in reprisal for the attack on via Rasella, preserves artifacts, newspapers, documents, memorabilia, and photographs related to the German occupation of Rome (1943-1944).
Inside the museum housed within, helmets, hats, mitres, and pistols of the SS are also displayed, along with the drawings made by the architect Giuseppe Perugini for the shrine (1944-1951).

The ANFIM (National Association of Italian Martyrs’ Families) organizes free guided tours of the mausoleum. At the association’s headquarters (via Montecatini 8), it is possible to view the library, photographic archive, and video library.
To reach the Mausoleum of the Ardeatine Caves, you can take Metro A (direction Anagnina) or bus line n° 714 to Piazza di S. Giovanni in Laterano. From there, take line 218, with the stop at Fosse Ardeatine.
From Metro B (direction Laurentina) get off at the Circo Massimo stop and continue with line 118 (direction Lagonegro) to the Catacombe di San Callisto stop.
