The Roman era monument surrounded the sacred area of the ancient city forum. The complex, recently restored, is located beneath the roadway and is accessed via a staircase next to the Cathedral. The cryptoporticus, unique of its kind, consists of a two-nave gallery arranged on three sides divided by arches. Of suggestive beauty, the monument is often the setting for theatrical performances or themed evenings.
Access to the cryptoporticus is from Piazza Giovanni XXIII, on the left side of the Cathedral.
