The museum is located inside the eighteenth-century Carlo Emanuele III fort, built in the spring of 1738, the first masonry construction of the then nascent town of Carloforte. Built at the center of a natural acropolis and set up as a guardhouse, over time it was used as a district prison.
The fort has been completely restored to host the museum, which currently includes six rooms and a garden. The Tonnara Room contains artifacts and tools related to tuna fishing, a model of a tonnara, built by an old rais, which clearly depicts the calato, i.e., the set of anchors and nets that form a gigantic rectangular structure extending from the seabed to the surface. A scale model of the nineteenth-century Portopaglia plant, which faithfully reproduces the various phases of processing and preserving tuna, is also on display. In the Galanzieri Room, a series of historical documents about the boatmen, or galanzieri, and the main tools used during navigation and for the collection and transport of ore with sailing boats are exhibited. The Documents Room contains the historical documents from the early years of the colonization of the island of San Pietro. Very interesting is the content of the Malacological Room, which includes an interesting and extensive collection of Mediterranean shells, particularly from the southwestern Tyrrhenian Sea. The tour ends with the Room of peasant activities with artifacts and tools typical of peasant life and the Emanuelli Room, which displays the collection of paintings by the artist Mario Emanuelli.
