More precisely, the city of Sibenik is located on the southwestern border of Croatia near the mouth of the Krka river (in Croatian Krka). If you want to spend a holiday focused on beach relaxation surrounded by crystal-clear sea, the gulf of Sibenik is well suited for this purpose with its over 200 islets and the charm of its white karst stone.
1 Cathedral of St. James of Šibenik
The admirable beauties in Šibenik are not only natural but also architectural. Of unquestionable charm and undisputed historical importance is the Cathedral of St. James (Katedrala sv. Jakova), awarded the title of UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2000. The construction work of the cathedral lasted just over a hundred years, starting in 1402 (although the plans were already ready in 1298), making modifications in 1431 and reaching official consecration in 1555. The Gothic-style building was worked on not only by locals but also Venetian artists and craftsmen. An interesting (and perhaps also somewhat impressive) feature of the Cathedral is the frieze decorated with as many as 71 human heads probably depicting some of the city’s residents.
No less interesting is the Large Loggia located next to the Cathedral, built in the sixteenth century and completely restored in the second half of the twentieth century following the destruction suffered during the Second World War.
