It covers an area of 113 square kilometers and reaches a maximum depth of 214 meters. It is called so because it faces the historic cantons of Schwyz, Uri, and Unterwalden, plus that of Lucerne. From an environmental point of view, it presents an enviable variety of biotopes and climatic zones. In its waters, constantly crossed by boats loaded with goods and tourists, magnificent pre-Alpine peaks are reflected, which are a small Eden for hikers and outdoor enthusiasts. In summer, the shores become welcoming beaches and the numerous hotels offer holidays dedicated to rest and tranquility. The north-western branch is also called the Lake of Lucerne; the northernmost one, Lake of Kussnacht; the basins of Weggis and Gersau instead take the names of Vierwald and Statter See, while the Uri section to the southwest is called Urnersee.
