Today, the two most interesting tourist areas of Port Elizabeth are essentially: the historic core called Central, and the beautiful beaches to the south of it.
1 Port Elizabeth: the Old Town
The old town, Central, showcases a pleasant parade of colonial buildings, excellently restored and open to tourists. Characteristic is Donkin Street lined with Victorian houses and the Donkin Reserve, a small lush and panoramic park, with a 19th-century lighthouse and a monument built by the former governor Sir Donkin in honor of his wife Elizabeth, after whom the city itself is named.
Other points of interest are the City Library overlooking the main artery, Govan Mbeki Avenue; the town hall, City Hall, in the center of Market Square and at no. 7 Castle Hill, one of the oldest city homes turned into a museum.
2 Port Elizabeth: Beaches
The highlight of Port Elizabeth are the beaches: wide, long, welcoming, lapped by the warm waters of the Indian Ocean, excellently equipped for those who want to practice water and land sports.
Among the most popular are King’s Beach, Humewood Beach with the amusement center Bayworld, equipped with an Oceanarium (aquatic park with seals and dolphins), the Reptile Park and Historical and Natural Museum; Summerstrand and Hobie Beach.
From the suburb of Schoenmakerskop begins a scenic path about 8 km long, to be done on foot, called Sacramento Trail, which leads to the most spectacular point of the coast, called Sardinia Bay.
