Right in the center of the town of Bloemfontein, a hill rises curiously, Naval Hill, which hosts the Franklin Nature Reserve, crossed by walking trails where you can observe antelopes and zebras. At the summit, there is the Lamont-Hussey Observatory, transformed into a theater and cultural center.
1 Bloemfontein: the parks
In Bloemfontein, there are many parks, starting with Hamilton Park, which extends right at the foot of the hill and overlooks Union Street, one of the main streets. Here, it is worth visiting the magnificent orchid greenhouse, with over three thousand specimens.
In the very central and fragrant King’s Park, roses dominate, with over four thousand plants, creating the famous Rose Garden. Near the pond, there is also the Waterfront, a complex with restaurants, cinemas, and entertainment venues that enliven the city center. Completing the lineup of parks is the Botanical Garden, spread over 45 hectares, with an incredible variety of plants and shrubs, making it one of the most beautiful in South Africa.
2 President Brand Street
The monumental area mostly extends along President Brand Street, with the City Hall, the Supreme Court of Appeal, the old Presidential Palace, the National Afrikaans Literature Museum, and the Fourth Raadsaal, the fourth council chamber.
