The San Pancrazio Tower, together with its twin the Elephant Tower, remains an intact part of the fortifications erected by the Pisans around the historic Castello district in Cagliari, between the late 13th and early 14th centuries, in anticipation of an attack by the King of Aragon. It was built in 1305 by Giovanni Capula, an architect probably of Sardinian origin, at the highest point of the hill to defend the northern entrance of the city and to control the surrounding territory. The tower takes its name from the Church of San Pancrazio, which used to be nearby. Equipped with a drawbridge, barbican, and moat, it has an L-shape and is made from large blocks of white limestone quarried from Bonaria. It rises about 36 meters high and has its side facing Castello open, as was typical of Pisan constructions, showing the four floors built on wooden lofts. To this day, you can observe the arrow slits positioned at various heights, the Pisan coats of arms embedded in the structure, and, at the highest part, the corbels. The tower underwent changes over the centuries due to shifts in its use, but it was restored to its original condition thanks to a restoration carried out in the early 20th century. From its summit, there is a splendid panoramic view of the city and its surroundings.
