Lisbon is a city full of energy and character, known worldwide as the birthplace of the poet who became the very symbol of Portuguese poetry: Fernando Pessoa. For literature enthusiasts and curious travelers, a one-day Lisbon tour exploring Pessoa‘s favorite spots and the venues he loved is a unique experience.

Pessoa’s Birthplace

His birthplace is in Largo de S. Carlos, where he spent his early childhood before moving to Latin America and then finally returning to Lisbon, where he lived until his death. The first stop worth visiting is the Casa Fernando Pessoa, a free-entry cultural center dedicated to the poet since 1993, located at Rua Coelho da Rocha 16.

The second stop is perfect for a break: enjoy a coffee at Café A Brasileira, a favorite haunt of Pessoa and other Portuguese intellectuals. Over time, it’s become an iconic meeting place and was awarded the title of “Portuguese Architectural Heritage” in 1997. Outside, you’ll find a lifelike bronze statue of Pessoa sitting at a table.

The next destination is Largo Raphael Bordalo Pinheiro: take a photo of the orange-hued building and explore this spot that Pessoa often visited.
Keep an eye on the time and continue wandering the area before heading towards Praça do Comércio 3, home of Café Martinho da Arcada: much like Pessoa himself, you can pause here for lunch and sample classic Portuguese cuisine.

There’s a decent walk before the next highlight of the Lisbon tour in the footsteps of Pessoa: your destination is Praça D. Pedro IV (Rossio).

Here you’ll spot an old tobacco shop, Tabacaria Mónaco, beautifully preserved since 1893 with much of the original décor still intact.

Spend the afternoon shopping or sightseeing; for dinner, keep with your “Pessoa” inspired day by choosing between two options: the historic Cervejaria Beira Gare—a brewery well-loved by the poet, especially recommended for seafood and grilled cod—or, if you prefer a classic restaurant atmosphere, visit Rua dos Douradores 190, at the Restaurante Pessoa named in his honor.

Round off your evening with a show or a concert—Pessoa was a regular at the Teatro Nacional de São Carlos, located at Rua de Serpa Pinto 9.
It’s a day immersed in the world of Fernando Pessoa, perfect for discovering Lisbon through his life and poetry.
