The route of the Modern Art Gallery of Milan GAM starts from the first six rooms, aimed at illustrating themes and figures of Neoclassicism, including masterpieces by Appiani and Canova. Two entire rooms are dedicated to the portrait genre, with particular attention to the works of Hayez. The lavish ballroom and the bright Parnassus room, both free of artworks, constitute two pauses in the exhibition path.
The Romantic period is retraced through the main artists (Faruffini, Mosè Bianchi, Induno, Piccio) and in the monographic room dedicated to the Scapigliatura movement. The rich Divisionist period, finally, is evoked in a series of thematic rooms: Segantini, Grubicy, Longoni, up to the socially themed paintings of Morbelli, Sottocornola and Nomellini. After the section with the masterpieces of Medardo Rosso, the first-floor route concludes with the Symbolist paintings of Previati and Segantini.
The visit continues on the second floor with the Grassi Collection, a collection of masterpieces of Italian and foreign painting from the 14th to the 20th century, to which a core of works of Oriental art is added.
Among the exhibited works, unique pieces by Manet, Cézanne, Van Gogh, Gauguin. In continuity with the previous collection, the Vismara Collection is finally visited, which gathers works of painting and sculpture of the Italian 20th century (Carrà, De Pisis, Modigliani, Morandi, Sironi) and foreign (Picasso, Matisse, Renoir, Vuillard, Rouault, Dufy).
