On the second floor of the San Giuseppe College, in the rooms of the Fianchetti-Colibrì Natural Science Museum, a magnificent collection of hummingbirds, true jewels of nature, is preserved. These birds combine the well-known small size with the surprising beauty of their plumage.
This collection, the result of thirty years of dedicated research by Cav. Can. Prof. Franchetti, represents one of the most important hummingbird collections worldwide, second only to that of Rio de Janeiro, and the most important in Italy. Out of approximately 334 species known in the New World, more than 226 are represented here, with over a thousand specimens. For almost every species, both sexes are usually represented; for some, juvenile plumage or rare forms of hybridism are also included.
