When you think of the word carnival, it’s impossible not to picture Rio de Janeiro’s Carnival—the ultimate celebration of joy and extravagance.

No introduction is needed: the Rio Carnival is the most famous in the world. During this period, the bright lights of the Sambadrome sparkle and the show begins. Samba schools compete to deliver an unforgettable spectacle with vibrant colors and millions of people filling the city streets day and night.

Festivities start as early as January and last until the beginning of Lent, marking a final farewell to indulgence, excess, and merriment. The Rio Carnival is renowned for its Blocos—street parties organized by groups, usually from different city neighborhoods, who parade in themed costumes and extravagant, creative masks, filling the streets at the end of the workday or during daytime hours.

These Blocos host lively parades, singing and dancing to the beat of drums. They’re also the creators and performers of their own songs, often inspired by samba classics or the traditional carnival tunes known as “Marchinhas de Carnaval,” drawing influences from polka, quadrille, waltz, and charleston.

The true symbol of the Rio Carnival is samba—famous worldwide, especially for the parades and competitions staged by the city’s major samba schools. Held in the iconic Sambadrome, these parades last four nights, each school fielding 3,000 to 4,000 sambistas in elaborate costumes, all interpreting their chosen theme.

Another highlight of the carnival are the floats, lavishly decorated and carrying participants in themed dress. These floats often reflect the samba school’s theme and accompany the parades, energized by the beating of the drums, the musical band, and the “puxador do samba”—the lead singer who passionately performs the Samba Enredo, telling the school’s story.

2. Sao Paulo Carnival

Sao Paulo hosts a carnival remarkably similar to Rio’s. The festivities center around the city’s own Sambadrome, hosting spectacular parades. Throughout the city, you’ll also find a vibrant atmosphere with free shows and open-air celebrations for everyone.

3. Recife and Olinda Carnival

These two neighboring cities share one massive festival where every visitor is encouraged to participate. The event’s unique energy is strongly influenced by the heritage of Afro-Indigenous tribes.

4. Salvador de Bahia Carnival

The Salvador de Bahia Carnival stands out for its strong African roots, with Afro-Brazilian music taking center stage. The entire event unfolds on the city streets. This distinct character has earned Salvador a spot in the Guinness World Records as the world’s largest street party, offering 24 kilometers of non-stop music and fun.

5. Florianopolis Carnival
Carnevale di Florianopolis

Certainly unique, the Florianopolis Carnival is also famous as the largest LGBT Carnival in Brazil. The main event is the Pop Gay Competition, where transgender participants and drag queens compete for the title of the year’s most beautiful. All around, the city buzzes with a lively, welcoming vibe, reminiscent of a vivid Gay Pride celebration.
