Il Museo della Porziuncola is an integral part of the itinerary for pilgrims and tourists who visit the memories of Saint Francis at the Papal Basilica of Santa Maria degli Angeli, from the Porziuncola to the Transito to the Chapel of the Roses, and offers a pause for a deeper understanding of these places through archival documents, models, and graphic reconstructions. The rooms host in chronological order the works that have made the Museum famous.
In particular: the Crucifix by Giunta Pisano (1236), the first example in Italy of a crucifix patiens on a monumental cross; Saint Francis and Angels by the Master of Saint Francis (13th century); a panel depicting Saint Francis attributed to Cimabue; the Madonna del Latte, a splendid polychrome stone sculpture from the late 14th century; a fine glazed terracotta altarpiece, a masterful work by Andrea della Robbia (1475).
Inside the museum it is also possible to visit the so-called Conventino, the remains of the primitive cells of the friars: they have been recently restored and are currently used to host temporary exhibitions of contemporary sacred art.
