The collections consist of thousands of mineralogical, geological, and paleontological specimens coming not only from Sardinia but also from other parts of the world. Most of these are present in the cabinets located in the corridors of the Department of Earth Sciences, while many others are stored in drawers, awaiting transfer to suitable display cases.
The preserved material is predominantly Sardinian.
In the “Leonardo De Prunner” collection, there are minerals such as argentite and native silver from Sarrabus, cerussite, anglesite, and phosgenite, coming from Montevecchio, Monteponi, and Villaputzu. The museum houses a collection of Sardinian rocks by Alberto Della Marmora and the splendid atlases accompanying the work “Voyage en Sardaigne” also by Della Marmora.
Of notable interest is also the collection of diamonds and platinum nuggets donated in 1866 by G. Mendel.
