The fortress was reopened to the public in 2000 after a long restoration process. It stands majestically on the rocky spur of Castrocaro and is considered by experts to be one of the most significant examples of fortified architecture. The exhibition path includes a permanent display of weapons, majolica, furnishings, and utensils from the medieval and Renaissance periods, as well as the Historical Museum. The latter, set up on the ground floor of the Castellano Palace, preserves artifacts dating back to prehistory, the Etruscan, Roman, Lombard, and Byzantine periods up to the Middle Ages: flints, jewelry, coins, medals, glass, majolica, weapons, and parchments.
