La Republic of San Marino is a quiet and virtuous microcosm, where living well is a given, also thanks to a decidedly soft tax system.
Its physical profile is identified with Monte Titano, a massive limestone block, which rises 749 meters above sea level and dominates a landscape of hills, with the Adriatic Sea in the background.
If there were no Titano, there would be no San Marino. For this reason, the mountain has become the undisputed symbol of the state. The borders, all land-based, are divided between Marche and Emilia Romagna, and the streams that spring from the same mountain (Marecchia and Marano, the main ones) flow into the Adriatic after a journey of about twenty kilometers.
From an administrative point of view, the territory of the Republic of San Marino is divided into 9 Castles, roughly comparable to Italian municipalities, although with more limited powers and competences. Each Castle has a Captain, a figure similar to a mayor, and an Administrative Council, elected by the citizens.
City of San Marino is the capital, the oldest settlement, with the symbolic monuments and 4500 inhabitants settled over an area of 7 square kilometers. The evocative architectures, which stand out against the blue of the sky, make it recognizable at first glance, starting with the “three feathers,” the three splendid medieval fortresses (Cesta, Guaita and Montale) surrounded by battlemented walls, fully entered into the state’s emblem. From the Basilica of San Marino, from the Monastery of Santa Chiara, from the Gate and from the Church of San Francesco. And then there are contrada Ombrelli; piazzetta del Titano; piazza della Libertà with the Palazzo Pubblico and a grand panoramic terrace.
