Il Museo attests the historical and artistic evolution of ceramic art, “for centuries the driving sector of the life and commerce of this city.” The Museum was established on December 22, 1999, finding its location in the Castello Episcopio, owned by the Diocese of Taranto, granted in loan for use to the Municipality of Grottaglie. The latter, built in the 14th century by Archbishop Giacomo D’Atri, under whose episcopal authority Grottaglie was located, is situated in the upper part of the historic center, placed between the ancient and the new residential core and inserted in the scenario of the evocative Ceramics district. The Castle, an integral part of the historical-artistic heritage, externally appears as a medieval fortress, with its rectangular tower, raised over three floors and crowned by battlements, but inside the 11 majestic rooms, illuminated by large windows, attest to the magnificence of the great residences. It is in the ancient manor of this building, after careful restorations in the early ’80s, that the Ceramic Museum is housed, with its 500 works, datable from the 8th century BC to today, consisting of works owned by the municipality, private collectors, and artifacts coming from the Archaeological Superintendency.
