The church of San Barbaziano is a deconsecrated church in Bologna located at the intersection of via Barberia and via Cesare Battisti.
It was built between 1608 and 1612 by Pietro Fiorini to replace the old church of the convent of the same name, considered no longer suitable for the new worship requirements defined by the Council of Trent. It consists of a single nave on which eight side chapels (four on each side) overlook, some of which are part of the original church and incorporated into the new construction.
Following the Napoleonic wars in 1797, the church and the related convent were expropriated and sold to private individuals who transformed the church into a warehouse and stripped it of its contents.
In 1870, ownership passed to the Military Domain, which continued to use it as a depot, also building a mezzanine to better utilize the space.
Due to the long period of improper use, much of the decoration has disappeared and the building is in poor condition.
In recent years, ownership has passed to the Superintendence for Cultural Heritage, but as of 2014 restoration has not yet begun.
