La Foresta Umbra is the green heart of the Gargano National Park. Spanning over 10,000 hectares, it is characterized by impressive flora such that in many places, even during the day, the sun does not shine (hence Umbra). La Foresta Umbra consists, at lower altitudes, of pine forests that become predominantly Turkey oak, downy oak, and holm oak woods. At higher altitudes, there are beech forests (pure or mixed). On the side facing Monte Sant’Angelo, yew forests can be found. The logistical base of La Foresta Umbra is located at the Visitor Center; here you will find the Natural History Museum, the reconstruction of the ancient woodcutter’s house, and the deer and mouflon wildlife areas. La Foresta Umbra is crossed by 14 paths created by the State Forestry Corps. Walking some trails, it is “relatively” easy to observe the wild animals that inhabit the forest (from roe deer to wild boars, passing through badgers, fallow deer, and martens), especially near the Sfilzi spring and the Cutini (small lakes) water areas. Additionally, beautiful flints can be found throughout La Foresta Umbra.
