Bad Egart is considered the oldest thermal center in Tyrol. It is documented that the spring has been used since 1430, but it was presumably also employed in Roman times for therapeutic purposes as drinking water and for thermal baths. The collector Karl Platino – known by the nickname Onkel Taa (Uncle Taa) – transformed the old nursing home into an exhibition facility with an immense collection – gathered over a lifetime. Here you can admire some artifacts from the ancient baths, as well as the cave from which the thermal water flows, several “Stube” where various collections of objects from the Tyrolean folk tradition are displayed, grandma’s shop (original small shop of St. Catherine in Senales), a Biedermeier-style kitchen with various tools and utensils, several “Stube” containing furnishings dating back to the Austro-Hungarian period – the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy K.u.K. – of Emperor Franz Joseph and Empress Elisabeth – better known as Sissi. The acronym K. u. K. stands for “Kaiserlich und Königlich” – which means “imperial and royal”. The exhibition collects thousands of antiques and curious collector’s pieces, such as Art Nouveau, sacred art, early 1900s toys, erotic art, minerals and fossils, tools of past crafts, earthenware pitchers and mugs, wooden sculptures, forged objects from the blacksmith, and various tools of former trades. The entire complex is conceived as a work of art, an authentic mine rich in treasures for the joy of enthusiasts of the Austro-Hungarian Empire era. It is the result of the efforts and charisma of its creator, who during his guided tours provides many interesting pieces of information.
Outside, in the open-air museum, it is possible to visit a garden full of art and curiosities, culture and nature, a Neolithic village of the Similaun man and the first copy of Ötzi, the reconciliation chapel, a snail farm, stone sculptures, sandstone masks and many ancient objects of the farmers. Entrance to the open-air museum is free.
