Powerscourt
Nestled in the southeast, they are famous for being the most beautiful historic gardens in Ireland, framed by the Wicklow Mountains. The park was created around 1730 and renovated in the 19th century. It develops around Powerscourt House, a Palladian-style villa, built on the ancient site of a Norman castle. A wonderful staircase connects the building to Triton Lake, the pond with a central fountain, created to imitate Bernini’s Roman fountain, around which an opulent Italian garden with terraces unfolds. Also interesting are the Japanese gardens, derived from a peat bog, with numerous varieties of bamboo and oriental conifers.
Lower Shannon
It is the southwest region, with the counties of Clare, Limerick, and Tipperary, bordered by the lower course of the River Shannon, the longest in Ireland. The landscape varies from the gentle countryside of Tipperary to the enigmatic limestone plateau of the Burren and attracts crowds of tourists, thanks to the characterful towns scattered along the riverbanks, the numerous remains of prehistoric settlements, fortified medieval abbeys such as Rock of Cashel (which preserves some of the finest Romanesque sculptures in Ireland), picturesque monastery ruins, evocative Celtic crosses, and the extraordinary musical tradition of County Clare.
