Cloister of the former Convent of San Domenico

In the heart of the old city of Taranto, the island where the first Spartan colonists settled in 706 BC, stands the former Convent of S. Domenico Maggiore, built in the XNUMXth century AD and today the seat of the Superintendence of Archaeological Heritage of the Puglia. Inside the convent cloister, renovated between the XNUMXth and XNUMXth centuries and marked by a series of arches supported by columns with corner leaf capitals, there is a large archaeological area, inhabited since prehistoric times. It is thus possible to observe the foundation structures of a temple built on the acropolis of the Greek colony of Taranto in the XNUMXth century. BC and the remains of the cell of the templar building. Two inscribed architrave fragments, reused in the Gothic façade of the convent, document the Roman presence of the site.
