S. Giuseppe Viterbo Library

The San Giuseppe Library was founded, in a reduced form, in the 40s, as a support to the San Pietro Philosophical-Theological Institute of Viterbo. It currently consists of the reading room and two large sections, divided into several rooms for the storage and safekeeping of books and magazines. From a starting nucleus of 12.000 volumes and around 120 Italian and foreign magazines, by the end of the 70s it reached around 25.000 volumes and 150 magazines. At the end of the 80s there was a total of approximately 35.000 volumes and 190 magazines, while at the beginning of the new millennium the volumes had reached 41.000. Today the books owned are around 47.000 and the magazines around 250. The sectors most cared for initially were philosophical, historical (especially of the origins of Christianity), patristic, dogmatic, moral, liturgical, pastoral and canon law. Subsequently there was a notable development of the sectors relating to educational sciences, namely psychology, pedagogy and sociology. Alongside these sectors, the literary sector (classical, Italian and foreign) has also been increasing; the hagiographic one, the catechetical one; that of the magisterium; that of Judaism; and finally that of Near Eastern archaeology. The library, which has taken steps to electronically catalog its entire book heritage, is a member of the ABEI (Italian Ecclesiastical Libraries Association), is included in the ICCU (Central Institute for the Single Catalog of Italian Libraries) and benefits from subsidies and contributions from the Ministry of Cultural Heritage, by the Region Lazio and the Province of Viterbo.
