Guide to Russia: what to see

Big, big, big! It is almost spontaneous to borrow the words of a song by Mina, to define the geographical profile of Russia, one of the republics of the former Soviet Union, as well as one of the largest nations in the world, if not the largest, with its over 17 million square kilometers, distributed between Europe and Asia, on this side and beyond the Urals.

La Russia it is a real colossus, which borders a multitude of states and opens up an incredible variety of latitudes, environments, climates, cultures, ethnic groups, idioms (the official language is Russian, but over 100 different languages/dialects are spoken locally ), religions, traditions…

Its very shape makes it resemble a bridge thrown under the Arctic ice cap, which connects Scandinavian countries (Finland e Norway) and former Baltic Republics (Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania) to Deep East Asia (Mongolia, China, North Korea), touching in the south the Poland and other former Soviet republics such as Ukraine, Georgia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Azerbaijan. Even when it comes to the seas, they don't joke, ranging from the icy waters of the Arctic Ocean and the Baltic to the mild ones of the Black Sea and the Caspian to the boundless ones of the Pacific Ocean.

The interior, where there are 11 zones with different time zones, is a mammoth puzzle of environments that extend for hundreds and hundreds of kilometres, conveying an inevitable sense of monotony, even if they are places of boundless beauty and grandeur , where you feel as small as ants: tundras, steppes, northern forests called taiga, temperate forests, plains and even some subtropical belts along the shores of the Black Sea.

The waterways that cross it and nourish it are over 100 thousand and then there is the Lake Baikal, considered the largest in the world. In relation to its immensity, the Russia it is sparsely populated, around 145 million inhabitants, which is very little and moreover concentrated around the main cities: Moscow, St. Petersburg, Samara, Win, Novosibirsk, Volgograd…, where industries flourish and essential services are concentrated.
