In Italy there are few foreigners, the low season is now at risk

From the data on searches in the booking engines of Italian accommodation facilities, it emerges that foreign tourists represent approximately one third of the total (36%), while the majority of demand comes from the domestic market. And the off-season is now in jeopardy.

The low turnout of foreign tourists in the Bel Paese unfortunately reflects an already well-known characteristic of post-pandemic tourism. So far it has been read as a concern mainly by destinations which traditionally have a high internationalization rate, such as cities of art or destinations lacuali. Today, however, the scarcity of the foreign market also weighs on other types of destinations, like the seaside ones, considering that foreign tourists are the protagonists of our low season.

The majority of foreigners are Germans

The most active market is certainly the German one, which accounts for 13% of the total searches, while all the other markets have a weight of less than 5%.

La presence of Germans in Italy is typically concentrated in the north of the country and this trend is confirmed again this year: tourists are looking for overnight stays especially in the Provinces of Verona (28%), Brescia (10%) and Trento (9%), more precisely on the municipalities overlooking Lake Garda. Germans are also interested in cities of art, but the most desired destination is the Province of Venice (15%); followed by the Province of Siena (2%) and of Florence (2%). There is little demand for them destinations seaside.

Weekend searches

Regarding the arrival dates, the Searches by German tourists mostly refer to weekend stays. Considering trips arriving from 16 August to 31 October, as many as 50% of searches are for weekends: 13% of searches are for the weekend of 20-22 August, 12% for the weekend of 27-29 August and 8% for the first weekend of September. It must be said, however, that the Germans seem to be the only ones interested in visiting Italy in the low season: both the Italians and the remaining foreign market almost abruptly interrupt their searches after August 15th.

The French love cities of art

Even the French (our second most active foreign market) have little intention of staying in Italy in the low season: of all the beds searched for, 61% are for staying overnight by 31 August, while those for September and October represent, respectively , 31% and 8%.

I French have a more homogeneous geographical distribution across the territory but the mete the cities of art are certainly most desired by the French: in the first places we find the destinations in the province of Venice (11%), Florence (6%), Napoli (5%) and Verona (5%). Furthermore, they are very popular mete easily reachable for them, like the Province of GenoVa, Imperia and the north of Sardinia.
