MSC cruises has included in the summer program an epic tour between dream islands capable of reaching the mysterious and immense Greenland. The “Green Land” will represent the culmination of a fairytale experience of a unique journey on board MSC Poesia, departing on 10 July from Warnemunde, in Germany, at the gates of Berlin.
22 days of stops and navigation in the North Seas with stops in UK, Iceland and Orkney Islands, in Scotland, surrounding a magical crossing towards the extremes of the Atlantic Ocean. Once you get in Greenland stop in Nuuk, the northernmost capital in the world which can only be reached by sea or air. Fishing port, it is the largest commercial center, is located at the mouth of the Godthåbsfjorden fjord, on the west coast of the island, about 240 km south of the Arctic Circle and about 10 km from the coasts of the Labrador Sea, on the south coast western part of the country. Looming over the city is the majestic Sermitsiaq mountain, which can be seen from every corner of the town; Then it will be the turn of the pretty colorful village of Ilulissat, capital of the municipality of Avannaata, whose name means icebergs, in this area immense blocks break off from the Icecap glacier, 5 km wide and of unknown thickness, the largest glacier in the world outsideAntartide. Most of the icebergs then stop in the frozen fjord, the Kangia, one of the mete most sought after in Greenlandic tourism, a World Heritage Site since 2004.
The passage through the Strait will be breathtaking Prince Christian Sound, characterized by a group of islands to the south where Cape Farvel is located, at the southern end of the coast, between the Atlantic Ocean to the east and the Labrador Sea to the west. Place known for its impressive glaciers, mountains, waterfalls, icebergs and fjords. As well as for wildlife viewing. A simply spectacular waterway, which only opens in summer when the huge blocks of ice melt, this alluring route is worth exploring, with its astonishing landscapes dotted with soaring snow-capped mountains, magnificent glaciers and granite cliffs.
The Greenlandic experience ends with the evocative city of Qaqorto, the largest city in the south of Greenland, over 3.000 inhabitants, its name means the white one, even if in summer countless wild flowers of every color bloom here. It is located 450 km as the crow flies from Nuuk (although the distance by land is much further); you can reach it by ferry and flights daily, but also with trekking from some neighboring towns. Sealskin cloaks are produced in this city. Qaqortoq, given the relatively warm climate, boasts the only fountain in the Greenland, at the base of which the names of living and dead citizens are written in brass letters; there is a museum on the history and culture of the place, and also a huge rock sculpture, Stone and Man by Aka Høegh. But Qaqortoq is above all the starting point for hikers heading towards nearby tourist attractions: Lake Tasersuaq, Peter's Cairn and the main one, Hvalsey, an ancient Scandinavian settlement of which only ruins remain: here, according to the Icelandic annals ( where it is called Flateyjarbók) in the 15th century there were many witch burnings.
