Looking at 2021 which has just begun, we can predict that the impact of the health emergency will not only concern the choice of destination, but also the type of trip we will book for next year.

The 5 types of travel of 2021

  1. A journey all for itself

I solo travel will most likely see a strong increase: the desire to leave will be such as to push even the most skeptical to choose an adventure without travel companions in 2021. The data from Booking.com pre-pandemic showed only 17%* of travelers interested in solo adventures, compared to the current 30%** ready to organize such a trip in the future. With 42%** of travelers certain they want to make up for lost time in 2020, it shouldn't be surprising to see so many interested in planning a big solo trip, to start exploring the world again.

  1. Luxury relaxation

The sudden and unexpected stop to travel has made the mere possibility of moving truly a luxury: in fact, 61%** of people declared that they will no longer take the freedom to move for granted in the future. The research highlights how the intention to travel again is very strong, but only 13%** are actually organizing a luxury stay (for example in a villa or 5-star hotel), while the majority of those interviewed (51%)** are thinking about the final details of a relaxing trip, considered the real treat to indulge in 2021.

  1. Family vacations

In 2020, many of us have been away from friends and family for extended periods. For 61%** of those interviewed, a good part of future trips will be dedicated to reconnecting relationships that have been distant for too long, to rediscover their loved ones. In fact, 36%** declared that, during this period of forced distancing, talking with friends and family about possible future trips was a great inspiration to leave again.

  1. Escapes in weekend

In a period of strong uncertainty like the one we are experiencing, it is very likely that travel will increase immediately, with over half of those interviewed (53%)** determined to take more short breaks in 2021 compared to 2019, to avoid any further disappointment. A further 28%** also indicated the weekend as the right time for a trip after the easing of restrictions, to escape from reality even just for a couple of days.

  1. Food for thought

If the desire to travel has not died down, it is also true that we think less and less about leaving mete abroad (53%**) even with the easing of restrictions. Moving to your country or territory to rediscover its traditions (especially culinary) is a rapidly growing trend. Fork and knife in hand, 36%** of travelers are ready to dive into gourmet experiences based on local products, and 38%** plan to invest the money they save by staying in their own country on dinners out.
