The path of the Gallery of Modern Art Milan GAM starts from the first six rooms, aimed at illustrating themes and characters of Neoclassicism, among which the masterpieces of Appiani e Canova. Two entire rooms are dedicated to the portrait genre, with particular attention to the works of Hayez. The sumptuous ballroom and the bright Parnassus room, both free of works, constitute two breaks in the exhibition itinerary.
The romantic season is retraced through the main artists (Faruffini, Moses Bianchi, I induno, Piccio) and in the monographic room dedicated to Scapigliatura. Finally, the rich pointillist season is recalled in a series of thematic rooms: Segantini, Grubicy, Longoni, up to the paintings of social subjects by Morbelli, Sottocornola e Names. After the section with the masterpieces of Medardo Rosso, the itinerary on the first floor ends with the symbolist paintings of Advance e Segantini.
The visit continues on the second floor with the Grassi Collection, a collection of masterpieces of Italian and foreign painting from the XNUMXth to the XNUMXth century, to which is added a nucleus of works of oriental art.
Among the works on display, unique pieces by Manet, Cezanne, Van Gogh, Gauguin. In continuity with the previous one, we finally visit the Vismara Collection, which collects works of painting and sculpture from the Italian twentieth century (Carra, DePisis, Modigliani, Morandi, Sironi) and foreign (Picasso, Matisse, Renoir, Vuillard, Rouault, Dufy).
