It was established in 1764 with the Constitutions for the reform of the University and placed, at the behest of King Carlo Emanuele III of Savoy, in the building erected above the Bastione del Balice, designed by the military engineer Saverio Belgrano of Famolasco, and which was to host the University, the Theater and the Tridentine Seminary. A special conservation and reading room called the 'Great Room', today the 'Eighteenth-Century Room', was reserved for the Library, furnished with elegant lacquered and gilded shelving. The Library was opened to the public in 1792 and over the years acquired new spaces including the Chapel, with a barrel vault and richly frescoed, now used as a room for the conservation and consultation of rare material. Its original nucleus consisted of the sovereign's private library, of funds belonging to the suppressed Jesuit Order and of the copies of the works that the teachers were required to provide. It currently preserves more than 6000 manuscripts, 236 incunabula and over 5000 sixteenth-century manuscripts.
