Teramo Apennines, itineraries between nature and hospitality

A small record-breaking territory, that of the Teramano Apennines. An amazing treasure chest of nature, history and hospitality that is still very little known and which is worth discovering and savoring right down to its most intimate corners.

A small record territory, that of the Teramano Apennines. An amazing treasure chest of nature, history and hospitality that is still very little known and which is worth discovering and savoring right down to its most intimate corners. Not everyone, for example, knows that the highest peaks of the Apennines nestle here (the Corno Grande del Gran Sasso-Monti della Laga), the southernmost glacier in Europe (the Cauldron), the most impressive Bourbon Fortress on the Old Continent (that of Civitella del Tronto) and five of the most beautiful art cities in Abruzzo: Campli, Castelli, Atri, Teramo and Civitella del Tronto. To this, we add a dense collection of archaeological assets, which ranges from Neolithic caves to medieval hermitages; Of villages very ancient and with character; of festivals and traditions that have overcome the challenge of time; Of “natural gyms” (bridle paths, rapids for rafting, trekking and mountain bike paths...) for those who love sport and life in the open air; of farmhouses with frank and genuine hospitality; of absolutely unique food and wine products (from lamb alla Marchigiana, pecorino cheeses, ventricina, Solina soft wheat bread, sweet pizza and bocconotti, Montepulciano delle Colline Teramane...), which have earned the province of Teramo the title of greedy den of the region.

From an environmental point of view, one of the most spectacular corners of the Teramano Apennines is located in the Laga and are the Gorges of Salinello, a limestone canyon shaped by the rapids and waterfalls of the stream, watched from above by the golden eagle, which lives here undisturbed, and by the ruins of Castel Manfrino, a fortress of remote origins, rebuilt first by the Lombards and then by the Swabians, who, halfway between the Gorges, it controlled the ancient communication route. In such a harsh environment, in medieval times, numerous hermitages began to nest, which time has returned intact and which are an integral part of the landscape and the territory. From the bottom of the Gorges there is even a small path, which requires climbing experience, which climbs up to the Hermitage of Santa Maria Scalena; while from Ripe, a hamlet of Civitella del Tronto, there is an easy and pleasant walk, which leads to a cave, already a place of worship in the Neolithic, which became, from the Middle Ages onwards, the hermitage of Grotta Sant'Angelo.

But the paths are also beautiful, that go up to Monte Foltrone, the “roof” of Campli mountain and Mount Girella, which marks the culmination of the so-called Mountain of Flowers. Even if they have more modest heights than those of Monti della Laga and Gran Sasso, these peaks are certainly worth a walk: from up there, on clear days, the eye can also capture the coast and the chain of Sibillini Mountains.
And then there is the bridle path, one of the jewels in the crown of the Gran Sasso-Monti della Laga Park. A large ring that runs all around the Gran Sasso massif, enriched by a network of shorter circuits, for a total of around 300 km of paths, which follow those used by farmers to reach the cultivated fields at high altitude. The route extends along all three sides of the Park (Teramano, L'Aquila and Pescara) and is served by rest areas equipped for the shelter of horses and riders. One of them is the Palad Complexini, in the municipality of Crognaleto, equipped with a guesthouse with 50 beds, a restaurant, an information point and a stable, which can accommodate up to ten horses.
