Costantino Barbella Chieti Art Museum
The Barbella art museum, housed in the seventeenth-century Palazzo Martinetti in the historic center of Chieti, was established in the 70s thanks to substantial donations from contemporary artists and works from Theatine churches and convents.
The collection is divided into 5 sections: pictorial works from the XNUMXth to the XNUMXth century, Barbella's sculptures, drawings on paper, the paintings of the Michetti prize and Castelli's majolica.
In the first part of the itinerary, dedicated to painting, the frescoes from the destroyed church of S. Domenico in Chieti, some XNUMXth century panels, a large group of Neapolitan canvases (XNUMXth-XNUMXth century) and XNUMXth century paintings, including the works of the Abruzzo artists Cascella and Michetti.
The second section displays the sculptures of the Theatine Costantino Barbella: sketches and terracottas representing the agro-pastoral world, and some bronzes, including the funerary sculpture "Death".
The third section contains works on paper from the XNUMXth and XNUMXth centuries; they range from scenic sketches by Bibiena to watercolors reproducing the typical costumes of the Abruzzo people.
In the fourth section, the works from the Michetti National Painting Prize of Francavilla a Mare (CH) and the Paglione donation, dedicated to contemporary art, are exhibited in rotation.
The last room contains the professor's collection of majolica. Paparella-Treccia, dedicated to the major exponents of Castelli's ceramic production.
