A Florence on Easter morning a large cart pulled by white oxen is carried in procession, containing the sacred fire, lit with the stones of the Holy Sepulcher donated to the Pazzi family in 1096 for the Scoppio del Carro.
Alghero, follows the ancient Aragonese tradition, and opens the Holy Week the Tuesday before Easter with the procession of the Sorrowful Mysteries. On Thursday the Via Crucis is celebrated, while on Friday the rite of the unnailing of the dead Christ from the cross begins the procession which starts from the church of the Misericordia.
Some countries instead celebrate the meeting between the Risen Christ , Madonna on Easter morning: in the province of Ragusa, for example, the statues of Christ and the Madonna, dressed in mourning, are carried in procession. At the moment of the meeting of the two cloaked statues of the Madonna, white doves take flight.
Also to Sulmonain Abruzzo, on Easter Sunday the procession of the Madonna running away in the square at the news of his resurrected son.
However, the event held on Easter Sunday in is unique Prizzi, in the province of Palermo: young people with hideous masks, impersonate devils who wander around the town with Death in tow. Whoever is indicated by Death is dragged into the taverns and forced to pay for drinks. In the afternoon the meeting between Christ and the Madonna is celebrated.
